STUDY OF INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION DUE TO INTRA ABDOMINAL ADHESIONS: AN EPIDEMIOLOGY

Vishal Dubey, Ritesh Dixit

Abstract

Intestinal obstruction is most frequent surgical emergency. Intra abdominal adhesions are one of common cause of intestinal obstruction. It was retrospective observational study to know the incidence of cases of intra abdominal adhesions as a cause of intestinal obstruction. In our study  the post operative intra abdominal adhesion was the most common cause(32.8%) followed by abdominal tuberculosis(27.1%), Strangulated hernia(11.4%) large gut volvulus(8.6%), intra abdominal bands and malignancy(7.1% each), Ischemic bowel disease and Intra abdominal abscesses(2.9% each). Among the causes of postoperative intra abdominal adhesions, the most common was open appendectomy (30.4%) followed by laparotomy for perforation peritonitis (21.7%), abdominal hysterectomy (17.4%), caesarean section and laparotomy for intestinal obstruction (8.7% each), open cholecystectomy, tubectomy and ovarian cyst excision (4.3% each).
